What's a Third-Culture Lunar New Year?

By Kim Pham

We’re rethinking Lunar New Year by us, for us.

For much of our community, Lunar New Year (not Chinese New Year, ahem!) is a time for family + tradition. Growing up as first-gen Vietnamese-Americans, that often meant visiting our grandparents in southern California, eating lots of traditional celebratory dishes, and going to temple in our áo dài.

While Vanessa and I are damn proud of our roots and will always honor what has been passed down to us, we're even more excited to celebrate our future — one that doesn't have to be rooted solely in nostalgia + tradition.

That said, we’re celebrating the Year of the Ox in our own third-culture way — with a mix of old, new, + never-before-seen. Central to our thinking around our first Lunar New Year as a brand was answering the questions:

What does it look like to have a third-culture Year of the Ox celebration? How can we celebrate with a uniquely Omsom energy?

For starters (pun intended ayyye), we’re dropping a LNY merch collection featuring: Our first crewneck (which has been highly requested by our community)3 socks designed in collaboration with three kickass Asian artists: Naomi Otsu, Gabrielle Widjaja, + Zipeng ZhuBRING THE HEAT by Naomi OtsuBRING THE HEAT socks by Naomi Otsu "I SAID WHAT I SAID" socks by Gabrielle WidjajaMANIFE$T socks by Zipeng Zhu

We’ve also teamed up with our badass friends Brian Vu (@brianvu), Ji Won Choi (@ji.won.choi), + Easy Peasy with Jordan (@easypeasyjordan) for some exclusive programming on how to celebrate LNY in your own third-culture way 🔥

Here’s our event cal (talk about booked + busy 😉):

There’s no “one” way to celebrate Lunar New Year - join us as we re-imagine it *our* way, proudly + loudly! ❤️
